Ongoing developments in various disciplines of automobile industry, are making automobiles highly intelligent and automated day by day, making them smarter, safer, cleaner and more efficient in its performance. Fully automated vehicles are increasingly likely prospects. It is believed to revolutionize road transport, public safety and our everyday environment.
Smart mobility can be defined as use of technology such as telematics, connected infotainment or intra-vehicular communication to solve mobility issues, enhance user experience and improve car safety, so as to make mobility more sustainable efficient and social.
Benefits of Smart Mobility:
Smart Mobility has significant benefits, to a name few:
-
Drastic decrease in Accidents: 90% of traffic accidents can be attributed to human error i.e. about 1.2 million people are killed in accidents every year. Smart vehicles have significant potential to reduce the risk of road accident.
-
Less fuel consumptions and lower emissions: Intelligent transportation System (ITS) has potential to reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Platooning for instance, which allows trucks to follow one another more closely, reduces the effect of air resistance. This can lead to a 5% ~ 15% reduction in fuel consumption, with a comparable & considerable reduction in CO2 emissions.
-
Fewer tailbacks: Communication between vehicles can have positive impact on traffic flows. For example, coordination with respect to braking and accelerating will result in fewer unnecessary tailbacks.
-
Reduced Cost: It not only increases fuel efficiency, but also reduce costs of paid drivers for taxis and commercial transport and the parking facility cost. According to a report from Institute of Transport policy analysis, Traffic in Netherlands will increase by 1.7% next year and 1.2% in the coming years, this would increase the travel time by 28% over next 5 years costing up to 3.7 billion euros per year. Introduction of autonomous vehicles can considerably reduce travel associated costs.
-
Supports Vehicle Sharing: Could facilitate car - sharing & ride - sharing, helping to reduce total vehicle ownership.
Another major cause for traffic disruption is - searching for a parking space in the city, which leads in generating a considerable search traffic. The result is loss of time, annoyance, unnecessary use of the road and pollution of the environment. To overcome this challenge, smart parking system is introduced which covers aspects like technical and infrastructure development as well as improved information services
